2023 AAG Annual Meeting

Author and activist Rebecca Solnit is AAG’s 2023 Honorary Geographer, an award given annually to recognize an exceptional leader in the arts, research, teaching, and writing whose work addresses geographic topics.

Susanna Hecht will participate in a conversation with Antoinette WinklerPrins, deputy division director of the Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences Division of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate (SBE) of the National Science Foundation.

This Presidential Plenary kicks off the discussion of the AAG 2023 theme, Toward More Just Geographies. Join AAG President Marilyn Raphael, her panelists, and your colleagues in a discussion on the nature of Just Geographies—and what we must we do together to bring ourselves closer to them.

Geographers constantly confront the question of who we are and what we do. But these cannot be defined without also asking ourselves what makes up the geographic community. Past President Dave Kaplan’s address focuses on how community intertwines with geography.

Despite the importance of weather modification in the context of climate change, it has not attracted much attention from geographers. Past President Emily Yeh takes this opportunity to consider practices of weather modification in the U.S., China, and the United Arab Emirates, through the lens of several geographical concepts.

The AAG Awards Celebration is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to recognize all AAG 2020-2023 Awardees, Honorees, Fellows, and Specialty Group/Affinity Group Award recipients. All AAG 2023 attendees are invited to gather and celebrate at this open reception.

AAG welcomes all AAG 2023 attendees to participate in a networking and social event on the first day of the meeting. Connect with colleagues you haven’t seen in person for several years and meet new collaborators. AAG Executive Director Gary Langham and AAG President Marilyn Raphael will set the tone for a dynamic meeting during this opening event.

AAG Executive Director Gary Langham welcomes all AAG 2023 attendees to stop by and grab a quick breakfast on the way to Friday’s sessions. For those who are interested, Gary and AAG staff will be available to talk about the new AAG Strategic Plan and answer questions about AAG programs and services.

This quiz bowl tournament has been held annually since 1993 at the annual Mmeting. Teams of graduate and undergraduate geography students selected from the AAG’s regional divisions will compete in the round-robin tournament.

Join Rebecca Solnit, Farhana Sultana, and Edward Carr to bear witness to the value of hope and collective action to safeguard the planet’s future. There will be a book signing after the session, and Boulder Book Store will be on hand to sell selected titles by Rebecca Solnit.

If you’re new to the AAG Annual Meeting, take this opportunity to meet other first-time attendees. AAG Staff will be available during this session to answer any questions you may have with navigating the largest geography conference.

Over the past 4 years the AAG and the Climate Action Taskforce have worked to find ways to significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with the annual conference. As one outcome of this effort, the Association is experimenting this year with a series of self-organized “nodes.” Through a collaborative effort, the Université de Montréal, the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) and Concordia University will host one such self-organized node. During the time of the meeting, a select number of organized sessions will take place across these universities as part of the official (virtual) program.

By collaborating in this node, geographers in Montreal are opening pathways of environmental transformation in our professional practices. We seek to demonstrate that knowledge production and exchange does not need to be a carbon-intensive endeavor. This effort also seeks to create new spaces of inclusion in geography by making participation in the Annual Conference more accessible geographically, institutionally, and financially.

Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) is providing access to all streamed sessions presented from Friday, March 24th to Sunday, March 26th. Sessions are hosted in select rooms on campus to allow attendees to view presentations, engage in activities, and interact with the host conference.

Selected sessions were determined by a committee of CSUF Geography Club members, however attendees are welcome to watch any of the hundreds of other available sessions on their own devices.

Registration was provided for free by the university for all attendees.
