Paul Wheatley

Paul Wheatley was a professor of geography for 33 years at University of California, Berkeley, University College London, and University of Chicago where he remained the Irving B. Harris Professor and Chairman of the Committee on Social Thought until retirement in 1991. His work focused on premodern urban settlements and the historical geography of Asia. The AAG awarded him the the Citation for Meritorious Contributions to the Field of Geography in 1974. An original piece in his honor was published in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers upon his death on October 30, 1999. The piece entitled In Memoriam: Paul Wheatley, 1921-1999 can be found in the December 2001 issue of the Annals of the Association of American Geographers (Issue 91, p. 734-747).
